"If you are of the baking-challenged set (like myself), holidays usually find you at the bakery. With Easter two weeks away, Montclair offers no shortage of pastry purveyors like Gina’s, The Pie Store, and even Whole Foods.
But I have stumbled upon another homegrown business with a name so adorable her baking must be good—In the Company of Yum is a teeny tiny straight-outta-her-kitchen business that whips up homemade pies, cakes, and treats and has garnered a fervent cult following.
Owner Jessica Glass is a lifelong Montclair native and baking is her passion and pedigree. “In the Company of Yum really started as a result of one item—my sweet potato pie. My Grandma passed her recipe down to me at a young age. As the only member in my family that knew the recipe, now especially since she has passed, it is my job to continue this tradition,” Glass says.
She doesn’t stop at sweet potato pie either, although she lists it as one of her personal faves. Glass’s offerings include some traditional favorites like apple and lemon meringue pie, as well as more unexpected creations like Blue Velvet Cake and The Man Pie—so named as the ingredients are favorites amongst her guy friends: chocolate, pecans, and Jack Daniels.
Glass stands behind her baked goods and prides herself on the heft of fresh ingredients, “each apple pie uses about 3-3 1/2 pounds of apples. My sweet potato pie uses about two to three sweet potatoes per pie ... I use tons of pecans, etc. I do not use any fillers and really try to have the ingredients stand out and speak for themselves.”
